- Imperialism is the ideology of broadening the power of a country through diplomacy, military force, or economic control. Countries like Britain and France wanted to spread their empires across the globe in competition of resources, and colonies.

- Militarism is when a country cultivates a strong military to defend or promote national interest. An example of this was the naval rivalry when Britain had the most powerful navy in the world and Germany made it their objective to build a much bigger navy than Britain.
- Nationalism
- To strengthen their position, countries would often form alliances with each other. Whenever a country would get into conflict, usually its allies would partake in the dispute usually creating a chain of disagreement and discord. Throughout 1870 and 1914 two large, powerful alliances were formed, the Triple Alliance (made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy) and the Triple Entente (made up of Britain, France, and Russia). The result of their altercations is what we now refer to as World War 1.
- The last of the four main causes of World War 1 is nationalism, which is often described as a substantial amount of pride or dignity in one’s own nation. For example, many Serbian nationalists believed that the Serbians living in Bosnia-Herzegovina should be emancipated from Austrian control and become part of Serbia.
