- the government made restrictions on education and physical appearance. Adding earpieces that disrupt thought for smarter than average people.

- Handicapped police add weights and an earpiece that goes off every 20 seconds for people with above average intelligence to block their thought process. For each weighted ball someone takes off they have to go to jail for two years and pay a two thousand dollar fine.

- protagonist wishes to restore people to conventional life
- if you were too pretty you had to wear an ugly mask. If you were too smart you had to wear an earpiece to block thought processes. The government wanted to make everything average so people wouldn’t feel different to other people.
