- The Darkling has emerged from the forest after injuring the stag. Then he starts to make his way towards it when Alina know she has to act fast.
- Alina Began to use her power and bright light flooded the forest but the Darkling countered with a black pool of darkness. They were evenly matched when Mal remembered he would have to kill Alina so she doesn't get into the Darklings hands but then as he was pulling out the knife he realized the Darkling was coming for the stag to steal it's power but if he did it first the darkling wouldn't have anything.
- He plunged the blade into the stag quickly as the stag let out a groan, Alina cried and the Darkling was furious. He then absorbed the power of the stag and knew he must take over another person with the power.
- Alina and the Darkling were still fighting as more and more anger grew. Mal noticed David by the tree and realized he was supposed to make and put the collar on Alina with all the stags power. He rushed towards him and told him he needed to put the collar on Alina, Mal chipped the antlers of the stag and David made the Collar. Mal came up from behind Alina as she was using her power and quickly fastened it on.
- The second the collar was put in place Alina instantly felt that her power wasn't her own anymore and it slowly died down. The Darkling kept pushing with the dark pool. Then Mal sent his first command to Alina, which was "brighter". Alinas power grew to twice the amount as it was before and the Darkling couldn't fight against any longer. The second the Darkling's power stopped Mal sent another command which was "stop". Then Mal remembered stories from the orphanage that the Darkling posses a power in which with great concentration he can slash a person in half using his mind. Then he wondered if Alina could do that so he gave the command "cut". Alina fiercely raised her arm and slashed the Darkling in two.
- The Darkling is dead. His hunters have run away. David comes from behind a tree and Mal gives him his knife as well as a slight nod. David walks towards Alina, grabs her collar and after a few silent minutes it comes off. Alina is upset with Mal but also grateful. She decides she will go back to Karemson, write to Genya and become a mapmaker.
