Storyboard-Text

  • Reluctantly, Odysseus tells the Phaeacians the sorry tale of his wanderings.
  • Come, let me tell you about the voyage fraught with hardship...
  • First, the winds swept him and his men to Ismarus, city of the Cicones. They plundered the land and stayed until the reinforced ranks of the Cicones attacked. They've lost 6 men, but managed to escape.
  • Then, Odysseus and his crew reached the land of the Lotus Eaters, where the inhabitants exceed in their hospitality. However, some of Odysseus' men ate the Lotus flowers, causing them to forget their journey and want to stay. To rescue them from this enchantment, Odysseus forcibly removed them from the flowers and restrained them on the ship, ensuring their journey continues.
  • The land they reached following the Lotus eaters was the Cyclopes' land. They were boundless creatures with no law or order. They all lived in their own cave with their family if they have one. Odysseus and his men stayed on the island for several days eating wild goats and observing the Cyclops. It wasn't until their third day that they reached out and met the Cyclops.
  • They immediately came upon a cave full of sheep and crates of milk and cheese. The cave’s inhabitant soon returned—it was the Cyclops Polyphemus, the son of Poseidon. Polyphemus made a show of hospitality at first, but soon turned hostile. He devoured two of Odysseus’s men on the spot and imprisoned Odysseus and the rest in his cave for future meals.
  • Odysseus executed a plan to blind the Cyclops Polyphemus by getting him drunk and driving a red-hot staff into his eye. Odysseus and his men escaped the cave by clinging to the bellies of Polyphemus' sheep. Polyphemus, now blind, called upon Poseidon for vengeance on Odysseus.
  • What is your name?
  • Nobody—that’s my name. Nobody—so my mother and father call me, all my friends.’
