- After 1830 when Charles Goodyear's father went bankrupt he became interested in something else. He became interested in discovering a method of treating india rubber so that it would lose its adhesiveness and susceptibility to extremes of heat and cold.

- He developed a nitric acid treatment and in 1837 contracted for the manufacture by this process of mailbags for the U.S. government.

- For the next few years, he worked with Nathaniel M. Hayward (1808–65), a former employee of a rubber factory in Roxbury, Mass., who had discovered that rubber treated with sulfur was not sticky.

Rubber made it possible for people to invent more like tires, factory machines, toys, and many more. Many Industries now rely on rubber products. Charles Goodyear's invention really did change the world.
