- On a cold and dark night at Laburnam Villa, the White family awaits a visitor. Mr. White and his son Herbert are playing chess while Mrs. White is by the fire.
- knock-knock!!
- Sergeant Major Morris visits the White family home
- Sergeant Major Morris arrives and tells the family stories of his 21 years of traveling to vast and exotic places during his tenure as a soldier.
- Despite the Sergeant's warnings, Mr. White, with the help of his wife and son, asks for two hundred pounds to pay the mortgage on his house.
