  • Musa Keita I, soon to be known as Mansa Musa came into power in 1312 A.D.
  • He was a devout Muslim, and he practiced his faith very often.
  • Because of his faith he went on a Hajj to Mecca. While on his hajj he brought thousands of soldiers, slaves, and civilians. Camels carried valuable items such as salt. Along with him, his wife brought 500 maidens in waiting carrying gold and other assortments.
  • During his hajj he stopped in many cities such as Cairo. While there he participated in Zakat (Almsgiving also known as Charity) he gave pieces of his wealth to everyone there. Mansa Musa gave out so much money that he destabilized national economies for about a decade.
  • Mansa Musa's hajj took about a year to Mecca and back, yet the influence had on world put Mansa Musa and the Kingdom of Mali on the map. Literally, Mansa Musa was included on the 1375 Catalan Atlas. Yet the king's work did not end there. Mansa Musa used the laws of the Quran in his justice system , and cities such as Timbuktu and Gao developed into world centers for Islamic learning.

  • Mansa Musa passed away in 1337 A.D. He reigned for 25 years, he passed when he was 56-57 years old. After his passing, his son Maghan I became King of Mali. Yet things were never the same, and Mali's government weaken. Allowing the Berbers to seize much of Mali's territory. But we learn about Mansa Musa because he is important to history, and he brings light to an era of prosperity and wealth. Making the Kingdom of Mali an important piece of African History.
