- Moonwatcher, a NightWing who can read minds and see the future, arrives at Jade Mountain Academy, and meets Kinkajou, an optimistic RainWing who would become her best and first friend.

- A mysterious voice speaks to Moon every night. He can read her mind, too. Dreams of Jade Mountain collapsing come frequently, with an odd prophecy: Beware the darkness of dragons. Beware the stalker of dreams. Beware the talons of power and fire, beware one who is not who she seems. Something is coming to shake the earth. Something is coming to scorch the ground. Jade Mountain will fall beneath thunder and ice unless the lost city of night can be found.
- Winter and Qibli, an IceWing and a SandWing, also befriend her, though Winter is not fond of Moon. The voice reveals himself to be Darkstalker, a legendary bad guy, but Moon still trusts him a little. A bomb is set off in the history cave, killing two dragons and injuring one.
- Moon and Qibli investigate the crime at an assembly. They discover there is a stone, known as Skyfire, that can block out a dragon's thoughts from mind readers like Moon.
- The culprit is Sora, a shy MudWing who won't forgive Icicle for killing her sib (short for sibling). she had only meant to kill Icicle, she didn't want to harm anyone else. She leaves Jade Mountain Academy.
- Darkstalker wasn't awakened, but little did Moon know that in a future book he would be. Of course, this is leaving out many major details, so you'll have to read the amazing book series to find out what happens.
