- فينوس، الكوكب الذي وتدور احداث القصة، هو الكوكب الثاني من الشمس.
- الكوكب يواجه المطر المستمر. هناك موجات المد والجزر والرياح بقوة الاعصار والرعد والبرق في جميع الأوقات، باستثناء ساعتين كل سبع سنوات.
- يعيش السكان في غرف تحت الأرض، متصلة بواسطة الأنفاق. في "ضوء الشمس" الوحيد للشعب تحصل عليه هو من المصابيح الشمسية.
