Storyboard-Text

  • So, it all started in 1981 with my mom...
  • It was 1981 outside the Guatemalan parliament building.
  • I'm scared, what if the government finds out that I helped those native farmers?
  • It's okay Rosa, i'm sure it'll be fine.
  • I don't like it here it's too cold. I wonder if we should move?
  • Okay, I will go to Toronto and see if it is a good place to live.
  • So, he went to Toronto and told us that he loved it, so a few weeks later we got on a train to Toronto.
  • But a few days later the government rounded up a lot of people and put them on a dark bus
  • Oh no!
  • Come here!
  • Thankfully one of my mom's friends in the government helped her out but she never found out what happened to the other people on the bus.
  • Please let her go?
  • Okay, I guess
  • We stayed in a small 1 room apartment there for a while, eventually we moved to a bigger one.
  • School was very hard for me because I didn't speak english and because of all the time I missed I was held back 2 grades.
  • Later on my mom started thinking...
  • I wonder if we should leave Guatemala, it's not safe anymore
  • But, first she had to get permission from my dad.
  • Please Carlos, if I take him to Canada he will have a much better life
  • I don't know Rosa, I love him so much I don't want to lose him
  • I graduated high school when I was 19, and we didn't have a lot of money so I worked my way though school at the Ontario College of Art
  • I met your mom in college when we worked in the same restaurant.
  • I know but it's what is best for him
  • Okay, I just want him to be happy.
  • My mom and step-dad, Nery had to go to Mexico to see if we could come to Candid
  • I'm sorry honey but we will be gone for 3 months, you will stay with abuela Carmen
  • NO, I don't want you guys to go!
  • A few years later in 2002 you were born.
  • Eventually they came back and said it was ok to go to Canada but they couldn't bring my little brother with us.
  • i'm so sorry honey
  • NO mami don't leave!
  • Everyone came to say goodbye to us.
  • I was only 11 so I wasn't sure what was happening, it didn't click that we were never coming back.
  • Bye, be safe!
  • My mom had a friend at the Mexican border to get us through illegally, but Nery had to cross the river.
  • I will, don't worry
  • We checked in to a cheap motel in Mexico
  • Maybe 2 or 3 nights
  • How long do we have to stay here?
  • A few days later we took another bus all the way to Mexico city
  • We stayed In a small apartment there for about 3 months
  • While we were there we made friends with the other tenants .
  • Hi!
  • So it was sad when we had to leave.
  • Bye!
  • When we landed in Chicago for a stopover and they locked us and all the refugees in a room so we wouldn't come into the U.S.
  • Eventually we ended up in Winnipeg. We lived there for a year and a half.
  • It's s so c cold!!!
  • By this time it was 1984 and my mom had a baby girl, Jimena, your aunt.
