In October of 1851 the British opened their first telegraph line that connected Calcutta and Diamond Harbour. They introduced telegraphs in order to help them maintain long-distance communication between each other all over India. The main communications they sent were used to warn other territories of uprisings taking place so that they can send reinforcements there. Overall, the telegrams were used to maintain law and order across all of India, which helped them maintain power. They also gave them technological superiority over their competitors.
We need to send reinforcements to Madras!
Okay, got it. I will tell our telegraphist immediately.
In 1853 the British decided to widen the size of their market for their goods, therefore they decided to build a transportation network. They built 4 main transportation networks; Railway systems, road transport, river transport and air transport. The railways provided a quick and reliable way to transport goods used for trade, as well as military troops. The British loved the beneficial outcome of their railway transportation system so they decided to make a road transportation system as well. Seeing as India is an agrigaria country though, the road system was hard to build and inconvenient by doubling the cost of transport and causing location inconvnience.
THESE ROAD TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS ARE GOOD FOR NOTHING!Thank gosh we have our railway transportation system though!
Seeing as river transportation was already flourishing in India prior to the British rule, the British took this to their advantage. They used the Brahmaputra and the Barak- Surma rivers to transport goods for trading between the northeastern India and the port of Calcutta. They mostly used country boats as they were quick, effective and cheap. Later on, steamships were introduced and they lowered the transportation time and increased the profit from trading.
YESS!!!
GREAT!
HA! This river transportation we are using is allowing us to gain lots of profit because we can transport trading goods much quicker overseas!!
