Storyboard-Text

  • Emperor Meji
  • Meji was born prince Sachinomiya in the home of his mothers' parents. He became Emperor when the Shogun Tokugawa resigned his power.
  • A man named emperor Meji once ruled Japan. With each day, he looked for ways to improve the land of the rising sun.
  • Meji ponders
  • In time, the limitations of tradition frustrated him.
  • Especially while the West continued to advance in technology.
  • For Example,as Japan came out of Isolationism and moved to urbanize, the Samurai and Shogun just weren't relevant anymore.
  • Samurai vs Conventional Soldier
  • Bound to honor and to decades of training, Samurai had too much governmental power, and too few numbers for an effective military against other countries.
  • While expertly trained and endlessly loyal, the Samurai's armor and blades weren't as efficient as the uniforms and firearms of european nations.
  •
  • Military reformation
  • He replaced them with a german-inspired military that served the Emperor, not the Shogun.
  • Some tried to rebel, but failed.
  • Japanese modernization
  • Average people around the world took interest in japan's new society. This interest would only grow.
  • Along with a new military came Japan's own industrial age.
  • The economy was shaped, and Japan was introduced to a Gold Standard currency
  • Meji's success
  • Meji was far from resting, but he was a step closer to his goals for Japan.
  • Japan still kept its identity even through modernization, but traditional thinking was no longer a weakness. They would soon become both technologically and economically advanced.
  • Clans were given wealth as compensation, but as the economy changed most of them became poor.
  • Daimyo lords and clan leaders no longer had any more right to anything than the rest of Japan did
