Storyboard-Text

  • The Terra Nova arrived at Ross Island, Antarctica on January 4th 1911. They then moved to Cape Evans (also on Ross Island) and constructed winter quarters. Captain Scott brings with him motor sledges, Siberian ponies, Huskies and support parties, while Amundsen brings with him four men and 52 dogs.
  • Compared to Roald Amundsen, Scott and his crew weren't prepared. First of all they chose a longer path. Secondly, they set off on 1st November and Amundsen's team left on the 19th October 1911.
  • Not long after they set off, the motor sledges were abandoned due to mechanical failure along with cold temperatures. The ponies did not do much better. They were killed (Dec 9th 1911) to provide meat and food for the return trip. Scott sent back more of his crew and in the end there were just five of them: himself, Wilson, Bowers, Oates and E. Evans
  • In the end they all died and that was the end of the race to the pole. On 12th November 1912 Tryggve Gran (part of a search party found the frozen body of Robert Scott and his companions Wilson and Bowers.
  • On Friday Dec 14th 1911 at 3:00 pm, Amundsen's team reached the South Pole. After leaving a note for Scott, Amundsen and his teamheaded back to the main base Framheim. Scott and his tired, hungry and sick team arrive 33 days after Amundsen. The men took pictures and left quickly. It was a tough journey back as the crew faced terrible weather.
  • On February 17th Petty Officer Evans was the first man to die. A month later while waiting out a storm, Captain Oates on his 32nd birthday said: I am just going outside and may be some time. He was walking to his death. A few days later Scott, Wilson and Bowers were laying in their tent waiting out another storm but realized the end was near.
  • Scott knew that One Ton Depot was just 10 miles away, and for his final entry in his diary he wrote: We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end cannot be far. It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more, I
