Aeneas arrives at carthage after a storm created by Juno almost wrecks them, this is were we first meet Dido. Only time Venus and Juno work together, Cupid is sent down to make Dido fall in love with Aeneas. Dido links to Cleopatra, talks of great fate ("great empire", mentions of Julius Ceaser and Romulus + Remus, Jupiter's prophesy. Cares for son, unwilling hero but good leader (see speech to men), hero - can recognise gods. Juno + Aeolus create storm, Jupiter's prophesy, Venus in disguise give info about Dido to son, Neptune calms storm, only time Juno + Venus work together, Venus + Cupid get Dido to fall in love.

Aeneas tells Dido about the fall of Troy, it starts with debate over the horse, Hectors ghost wakes Aeneas up, fighting and taking spoils, Venus stops Aeneas killing Helen, tells him to go home, signs from Jupiter (fire and lightning), went back for Creusa. Fire around Ascanius hair, War/loss familiar to Romans from Civil war. Aeneas is Greek hero ("Let us die"), pietas - carries dad on back, brings household gods, not stoic -feelings before duty, hero -gods help, cares -fights for people/city, went looking for wife. (+ spoils bad) Venus stops Aeneas killing Helen, tells him to go home, Jupiter's omens/signs, fire and lightning, persuades dad to leave. Ghosts + gods make sure Aeneas follows fate.

Book 4
Aeneas and Dido get married in a cave, Dido talks to Anna, after staying in Carthage for ages, Hermes is sent down to tell Aeneas to hurry up, Dido + Aeneas fight, Trojans leave, Dido kills herself on a pyre with their bed at the top. Links Dido to Cleopatra, makes Augustus look good as Aeneas associated with Augustus, doesn't suffer same mistakes as Antony, explanation for Punic wars (Dido's curse), references future events. Dido too good, makes what he did even more impressive, stoic, hero -gods help, pietas -duty for Rome. Hermes acts as a messenger, Juno marries them in a cave, Juno sent Iris to help Dido get to underworld.

Book 6
Dead Dad! Dead Dido!

Aeneas goes to meet the Sybil, and goes to the underworld, meets Dido and husband, meets the dead, meets his dead dad, hears about the future, and meets the great heroes to come, e.g. Augustus. Reference to heroes that they would know lots about, Aeneas's future is their past, mentioned Apollo (Augustus patron god). This is the turning point for Aeneas character, understands his fate, more stoic, hero -travel to underworld. Aeneas gets help from Apollo's priestess, the Sybil, promises to build shrine to Apollo.

Book 7
Aeneas + Trojans land in Latium (future Rome), Latinus gets omens of bees, and fire (on Lavinia's hair), means stranger is here to marry her, but Turnus wants to marry her. Trojans go to Latins peacefully. Alecto (fury) installs furor in Amatta and Turnus, and makes Ascanius accidentally starting a war. Gates of Janus opened, list of Latin heroes. Gates of Janus -600/611, and mentions of River Tiber. Snake Alecto uses to install furor reference to Cleopatra?? More stoic after trip to underworld, pietas. Juno (+Alecto) open war gates and start war, and make Turnus + Amatta mad, ruining things, care little for those they involve.

Book 8
Aeneas now at war, meets the Arcadians, led by Evander who liked his dad, story of Hercules against Cacus, asks his to take Pallas with him. Aeneas shown around the area (Romulus's grove), tells him of a bad king. Venus persuades Vulcan to make a shield, Venus gives Aeneas his shield, decorated with the future/fate. Mentions places the audience may have been, still had Hercules cults, fight for future + trojans, Battle of Action in middle(defeat of Antony + Cleopatra), protected by fate. Good leader, listen even when not there. Pietas, kinda compared to Hercules. Stoic! Had help from Venus and Vulcan, made him shield + armour. And god of Tiber helps him find Arcadians. Shows they can be caring, also Aeneas worthy of their help.
