- Phineas Gage's actually lived 12 years after his accident. This is because the tamping iron only went through the certain part of the brain called the frontal lobe. Nobody completely needs that part of the brain. But when Gage lost it, he was a different man. He lost his entire ability to be social. He did amazing things for someone with severe brain damage. He joined Barnums circus, worked a stagecoach and much more. But when he returns home years after he moved away, he begins to have epileptic seizures. An epileptic seizure is not like a normal seizure. This is usually the side affect to something like a brain tumor or a blow of the head. The epileptic seizures finally finish Gage off on May 21, 1860. most likely because the epileptic seizure caused hypothermia. Hypothermia is when your blood temperature gets to low and starts taking away blood flow starting from your feet and hands to protect your vital organs. Eventually Phineas' heart stopped, killing him.
