Because of the Tennis court oath, King Louis XVI thought he needed protection so he hired guards. The people thought the military was against them, so they stormed the Bastille (a prison) to get supplies to fight back.

The king's going to kill us! We need supplies to fight back!!

The Storming of the Bastille led to the The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, giving citizens equal rights. King Louis, however did not like this and tried to flee the country. The people forced him to come back, but they stripped him of some power. War broke out and the French people decided that the king needed to go for good. (by execution)

After the Kings execution, a man named Maximilian Robespierre took over and killed thousands who showed any support to the now former monarchy/government. This became known as the Great Terror, which ended with him being executed himself.
