Storyboard-Text

  • At a small construction site, there is a large population of cats, that live unbothered. The gene pool is very large as it consists of many different alleles. The gene pool is all the alleles of a population, and it is where genetic variation is stored.
  • I really hate it here. It's dirty and all the other cats are mean to us.
  • Me too!We should leave. We should also bring Gary and Linda.
  • I don't care that you're leaving. You guys stink!
  • Fine. I don't care. You guys still stink!
  • A group of four cats, three orange and one brown, had established a new population, isolating them from the original group. The founder effect has started as the small group had splintered off and started their own colony. The gene pool has become smaller as the alleles of the cats have been reduced to the few the new population has.
  • What are you doing here. You weren't invited. Get out!!!
  • I love it here. It is much cleaner and feels much more like a home
  • I agree, we should never leave.
  • Soon, we will have an entire population that will be just like the four of us.
  • With a smaller gene pool, the variation has gone down, so all of the offspring will be similar in appearance. The entire population will resemble the founding population. A population is all the member of the same species living together. A founding population is all the original members that had been isolated from the old population. (The four cats that left the source population)
  • I can't believe we had a baby. He looks just like us.
  • As the cat family continues to grow, the number of phenotypes do too, as a heterozygous cat is formed. It is not an introduction of new alleles, but the scrambling of already existing alleles.
  • This is amazing. Our tribe is already almost as big as our last one.
  • This is a meow-gicalmoment
  • 20 years later...The once rare alleles, orange fur and brown fur, now make up the entire population, as the diversity of the group became smaller and now only consists of two colours. This change in allele frequency over generations, is an example of microevolution as a result of genetic drift. This new population drastically differs from the original group due to the results of a chance event that caused isolation to occurred (Genetic drift).
  • Wow. It has been so long and I love our big family
  • As the founder effect had skewed the gene pool of this new population of cats, evolution has occurred in the smallest form. The population of cats continue to strive and live happily ever after.
  • 'Orange' you glad that we left those other cats.
