The egwugwu are upset at Enoch because he tries to take the mask off one of them during an important ceremony. To get back at what he did they burn down his territory and the church Enoch go to. Mr. Smiths church.
The commissioner wants to speak to the leaders of Umofia about the church getting burnt down. The white soldiers unexpectedly attack the villagers of Umofia. They lock them up in jail and threaten to hang their leaders if a price of cowries aren't payed. The villagers run around to collect the debt.
The men imprisoned return back to their homes beaten. Obierka and Ezinma examined the men and can tell the have been beaten, burned, whipped, etc.
There is a meeting upon the tribe and the discuss about the destruction the white people have caused to them and their village. As they are having this meeting a white messenger comes and tries to speak to all of them. Okonkwo barely lets the man speak and kills him with a machete. The people at the meeting start to question what he has done.
The commissioner goes to Okonkwo's territory and asks a group of villagers and asks for Okonkwo. They tell him he is not home and then the commissioner begins to get upset. He then ask Obierika where he is and the commissioner gets the same answer.
Last Chapter Okonkwo hangs himself
Obierika takes the commissioner to find Okonkwo. They came upon the body of Okonkwo hanging limb from a tree. Okonkwo has taken his own life. Obierika ask the commissioner for help to bury his body but as the chairman he is not aloud. Obierka lashes out and blames him for Okonkwo's death.
