Hey colleagues, these feral horses in New Zealand seem to only have one male among all of these females.
Wayne Linklater
I was here first! These are my females to defend!
But I want to mate with them!
The two male feral horses are fighting! Do you think the male in the band is defending the females? Or is he defending their resources?

GRRR!!
We need to study this aggressive behavior between the males in order to determine what they are fighting over... Maybe we should track their behaviors and locations!
Back off!!!
Wow! After tracking the locations of the bands these past three years, each band of horses seemed to have the same geographic area!
Wayne Linklater
Because of the overlap in home ranges, it does not appear that these male horses have been fighting over resources. Therefore, I believe that we have been seeing these males defending females! This is known as female defense polygyny.
Wayne Linklater

Three years later...
