- Crisostomo Ibarra, a young and wealthy Filipino, returned to his homeland after studying in Europe for several years. Capitan Tiago hosted a party in his honor at his home in Manila. and it was attended by a number of well-known local figures.
- Padre Damaso insulted Ibarra and tried to ruin his reputation during the party. But Ibarra, the gentleman, simply ignored the friar's insult.

- Don Rafael was thus imprisoned and tragically died in his cell. His body was originally buried in consecrated ground, but his enemies had it removed from the Catholic cemetery.
- Don Rafael was falsely accused of being a heretic and filibustering by the San Diego curate due to his non-participation in mass and confession.
- Lieutenant Guevara approached Ibarra as he was leaving Capitan Tiago's house and told him about the tragic fate of his deceased father in San Diego.
- He had accidentally pushed and killed the brutal Spaniard while attempting to defend the powerless boy.
- Ibarra went to San Diego to look for his father's grave after a lovely visit to his girlfriend. He had learned from the gravedigger that his father's body had been dug up by the curate's order to be transferred to the Chinese cemetery. He got angry after what he learned.
- It was raining and the corpse was heavy, so I simply threw the body into the river.
- Ibarra hosted a picnic at the lake for Maria Clara and her family when they arrived in San Diego. During the picnic, Ibarra had saved Elias, the boatman who had been nearly killed by a crocodile trapped in the fish cage. Later in the picnic, some Guardia Civil members arrived, pursuing Elias, who had previously assaulted Padre Damaso and the alferez.
- However, Elias had escaped before the Guardia Civil arrived.
