- Robert Smalls was a 23-year-old slave who was hired by the Confederate navy to pilot the Planter, a military transport ship, around Charleston because of his knowledge of the harbor.
- You have been hired we need your help
- On May 13, 1862, Smalls and the other black crewmen of Planter steal the ship while white crewmen were asleep on the shore. They then stopped to pick up Smalls’s family.

- Smalls, dressed in the captain’s jacket and straw hat, used the correct signals to drive the Planter past Fort Sumter and other Confederate ships and into the Union blockade outside Charleston.

- Smalls met with Abraham Lincoln to persuade the President to let more freed slaves fight for the Union. Smalls was also given $1500 by Lincoln as a reward for the Planter.
- During Reconstruction, Robert Smalls served in the state government of South Carolina and was elected to the United States congress in 1875 as a member of the House or Representatives.
- Robert Smalls died in Beaufort on February 22, 1915, in the same house behind which he had been born a slave.
