- Here we have Stella and her brother Jojo, looking across a pond, at the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) burning a cross in the forest near her home. Stella and Jojo warn their parents, who call a meeting to all the African Americans in the wnole town of Bumblebee, California. Since kids can't be in the meeting, Stella and her friend, Tony, wait outside and share secrets in the night.
- Climax
- Racism against African Americans is happening all over the town of Bumblebee. Here Stella is retelling the story of a racist incident with her three-year-old self, her mother, and the white doctor, Dr.Packard; As Stella was jumping on the street, she accidently jumped on Dr. Packard's feet, and while Stella was appoligizing to him over and over again, he slapped Stella on the face, pushed her mother aside and firmly walked away. After that, Stella and her mother curled up on the sidewalk and ,cried.
- Falling Action
- Stella's father makes a tough decision; he's decided he's going to register to vote, along with the Pastor of their church and Hobert Spencer. Her Dad decides to bring Stella with him, to show her what true bravery is. When they get there, they have to take a test and pay a fee of two dollars. The person at the checkout counter grades the papers. He says they passed and to come back in a week to vote.
- Resolution
- While Stella is walking in the forest, she sees a fire burning and realizes it's the Spencer house! She quickly runs toward it and joins the bucket brigade that's happening. Everybody knows the KKK did it because Mr.Spencer registered to vote. Luckily, everyone seems safe. However, with all the damage that's been done to the house, Mr.Spencer will probably have to rebuild it.
- When half of the fire is put out, Ms. Spencer realizes something; Hazel Spencer (Mr. and Ms. Spencer's daughter) is missing! Stella thought about what she would do if she saw a fire burning in her house. She would run and hide in the forest! Stella suddenly knew Hazel was probably in the forest hiding somewhere. Stella runs in the forest, finds Hazel, and brings her to Mr. and Ms. Spencer. They are both very grateful for what Stella did.
- Hazel?
- Hazel? Where's my Hazel?
- ?!
- Before everyone knows it, it's two days before Christmas! Stella's school celebrates by having a Christmas Pageant. It did not go as expected. All the wise men fall over and everyone is laughing! After the Christmas Pageant, no one, including Stella, has a care in the world.
