- One day, Virginia was walking along the corridor, when she saw a person in one of the rooms andwent in. To her surprise, it was the Canterville ghost himself and he looked really sad.
- She expressed her regret, saying, "I am so sorry for you, but my brothers are returning to Eton tomorrow. If you can manage to behave yourself, no one will bother you."
- To this, she replied, "Your existence has no purpose at all, and you are aware that you have behaved very badly. Mrs. Umney informed us that you had murdered your wife."
- In response, the ghost declared, "Asking me to behave myself is absurd. I must continue to rattle my chains, groan through keyholes, and wander about at night. It is my sole purpose for existence."
- "He said, 'Well, I quite admit it, but my wife was not very nice, you know, and she knew nothing about cookery. However, it is all over now, and I don't think it was very nice of her brothers to starve me to death.'"
- "She asked, 'Starve you to death? Oh, Mr. Ghost, I mean Sir Simon, are you hungry? I have a sandwich in my case. Would you like it?'"
- "He replied, 'No, thank you, I never eat anything now; but it is very kind of you. You are much nicer than the rest of your rude, dishonest family.'"
- Having said this, Virginia turned around and announced that she was leaving the room.
- The ghost pleaded, saying, "Please don't go, Miss Virginia. I am incredibly unhappy and genuinely unsure of what to do. I desperately long to sleep, but I'm unable to. It's been three hundred years since I last slept, and I am utterly exhausted."
- Virginia cried out, stomping her foot, and exclaimed, "Stop! It's you who's being rude, and as for dishonesty, you stole the paints from my box to touch up that absurd bloodstain in the library. First, you took all my reds, so I couldn't paint any more sunsets. Then, you grabbed the green and the yellow. In the end, all I had left was blue and white, and I could only create moonlight scenes, which aren't exactly easy to paint."
