  • The tale opens with the declaration that Jacob Marley, Scrooge's business partner, is as dead as a doornail. Scrooge is portrayed as a miserly and unkind individual, while Bob Cratchit is seen attempting to warm his hands over a flickering candle as the feeble fire begins to fade.

  • HUMBUG!
  • Fred, Scrooge's nephew, greets him with a "Merry Christmas" and invites a dinner, but Scrooge dismisses him with a grumpy "Bah! Humbug!"He adds that anyone who wishes him a "Merry Christmas" deserves to be boiled in their own pudding and buried with a holly branch through their heart.

  • Marley's ghost has come to warn Scrooge that his miserableness and horridness to others will lead him to the same fate Marley himself suffers in death. To free himself, he must be happy and receive help from three spirits.
