- She tries to get the mouse, but the mouse scurries up the tree. As Lily approaches the tree, she knows that she is 7 feet away, and she knows that the tree is 12 ft. high. She wonders at what angle she's looking at the mouse. She calculates tan–1 (12➗7). It is 60º.
- Everyday, Lily the cat gets up early to hunt for food. One day, while she was out hunting, she sees a mouse next to a tree. Lily wonders how far away she is from the mouse. She knows that she is looking at the tree at an angle of 50º, and the tree is 12 feet high. She finds out that 12➗tan(50º)=10. So, she is only 10 feet away form the mouse.
- When the mouse sees Lily, it starts running and climbing another tree. Lily doesn't know the hight of this tree, but she knows that she is standing 5 ft. away looking at the tree at an angle of 40º. She finds out that 5tan(40º)=4. So, the tree is 4 ft. high.
- Lily leaps and catches the mouse. All her efforts and knowledge of trigonometry paid off. Now she enjoys a nice meal, and tomorrow, she's going to do it all over again.
