  • Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are stumped as to why Hamlet is acting so strangely, but they do tell Claudius and Gertrude that he was delighted to see the performers arrive. The King and Queen consent to attend the performance in the hopes that Hamlet's mental condition will improve.

  • Hamlet considers murdering himself again in a soliloquy, but is scared of the implications in the afterlife. Hamlet recognizes that fear turns individuals into cowards and action into inaction, as evidenced by his reluctance to avenge King Hamlet's death.
  • To be, or not to be
  • As Polonius and Claudius had planned, Ophelia enters to speak with Hamlet. Hamlet asks Ophelia if she is truthful, and then goes on to remark that beauty corrupts truthfulness. Given his contempt for women, Hamlet tells Ophelia that he once loved her, then claims that he never did. He tells her to go to a nunnery to prove he isn't insane from love.
