- Jackson, Andrew (1767-1845), was the first president born in a log cabin.Jackson, the son of poor Scotch-Irish immigrants, became an orphan at at the age of 14. He grew up on the frontier of the Carolinas.

- The War of 1812 gave Jackson new opportunities. He had been a major general in the Tennessee militia since 1802. In 1814, Jackson was stationed in New Orleans with orders to defend it. The British army of more than 8,000 men began its attack at dawn on Jan. 8, 1815. The attack ended in a terrible defeat for the British, who suffered 300 men killed, 1,250 wounded, and 500 captured. The American losses totaled only 14 men killed, 39 wounded, and 18 captured.

- Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1828. He served two terms as president, 1829-1837. He is known as the fist president president for the common people, and the founder of the democratic party. He also used a spoils system to reward his supporters by giving them government jobs.
