Storyboard-Text

  • "I had been invited by my law firm’s leaders to attend their annual party at Octavia Whitmore’s mansion on the Avenue of Streetcars. It was a highlight of my life, an honor for a lowly associate just to be invited, although I was surprised to be told to show up in a costume." (Ruffin,1)The story starts off with the narrator being invited to a party with his colleagues and bosses. It is very important because at this event the decision for who would take on the new position would be determined from this event.
  • "I suddenly realized I had made a serious miscalculation. Riley’s costume was a great way to get attention and spread good cheer. Mine, on the other hand, was the sartorial equivalent of aglower." (Ruffin,3)At the party one of the narrator's coworkers has a good conversation which made the narrator realize that the coworker was right and made him worry. Their costumes were apart of the decision making and the narrator chose a costume that represents him as having power and being almighty while the other colleagues chose something that represent the lower class of black people.
  • "I like you. Always have, but also I put a dollar on you winning.” Octavia stepped into me, the way she might if we were about to tango, close enough that I could smell her liquor-drenched breath. “If you want to win, gather your balls and get out there, boy.”(Ruffin,6)Here the narrator's boss helps him out with a new costume because she has faith in him and wants him to take on the new leadership position at the office. She also has put lots of money into him so she understood the assignment of helping him choose something new. He chooses a African tribe leader to persuit his new looks and walks out grabbing all the attention.
