- Reverend Parris is the minister in the town of Salem, Massachusetts. His daughter, Betty Parris, is currently unconscious after a being caught sporting in the woods. His niece, Abigail Williams, lives in Salem and has been fired from her job as maid to the Proctors.
- John Proctor is a local farmer. His wife, Elizabeth, has not forgiven him after his recent affair with a younger woman.
- Thomas Putnam is a wealthy land owner in Salem. He is not well liked in the town as he is known to cause disputes over land ownership...
