The setting of the story takes place on a river in between Vermont and New Hampshire during the 1960's and 1970's. The narrator, 14, asked his neighbor Sheila Mant, 17, on a date to a music festival.

The main conflict is when Shelia mentions that she thinks fishing is stupid; while the narrator loves to fish and went fishing all summer. This a conflict because the narrator brought his fishing rod along with him on the date to fish.

The rising action is when the narrator hooks the biggest bass he has ever seen but Sheila doesn't know that he brought his fishing rod with him so he has to stay discreet.

The conflict of the story is when the bass has become a problem to catch since it is making too much noise to not have Sheila hint on to what the narrator is doing. So the narrator has to decide between catching the fish and ruining his chances with Sheila or, letting it go. He ultimatelydecides to let it go.

The falling action is when the narrator and Sheila make it to the music festival. Sheila's main goal is when she made it to the festival, to meet with another guy she likes instead.

The resolution is when the narrator comes to terms with the fact that it would've never worked between them and Sheila never really cared for him in anyway. He is sad about the fact that she didn't like him back but, is ultimately haunted about not catching the bass.
