- On October 1st, 1938, German Chancellor Adolf Hitler ordered the German military to invade and occupy the Sudetenland, which was a region in Czechoslovakia that was home to a large German-speaking population. This move was carried out without any resistance from Czechoslovakia or other countries, as the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany under the Munich Agreement, signed by Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy on September 29, 1938. The agreement was an attempt to prevent a war by allowing Germany to take control of the Sudetenland without a fight. However, the Munich Agreement was widely criticized as it allowed Hitler to take control of a large portion of Czechoslovakia without any repercussions and it was seen as a sign of weakness, which Hitler interpret as a green light for further aggression.
