Storyboard-Text

  • After viewing Professor Mirabella’s presentation and reading the introduction, I learned so much about the life and challenges a child with disabilities faces on a daily basis.
  • Children with special needs should always be welcomed into activities and groups they enjoy. The impact this had on me is how important this is so they can develop friendships and contribute to sports, games and friendship circles with others.
  • When Gina’s sister’s dance teacher incorporated her into the dance stretches and did not leave her out. The teacher even has Gina a tutu for her to wear for the end of the year performance. This reading presents different ways to accommodate students with disabilities. The teacher modified the stretches in dance class so that all students were able to participate.
  • It was impactful to see how parents find different ways to accommodate their children's needs. Parents are sometimes faced with creating, inventing or modifying equipment that helps their child to progress.
  • The community came together to raise money for a tricycle for Gina. Around Christmas time the whole community came together to present her with this tricycle. This outpouring of care from the community inspired me to reflect on how a community can come together as one. It was also inspiring that this gave Gina the opportunity to reach out to others to form a lasting bond and make new friends. I thought it was a meaningful opportunity to come together to help one another out.
  • Gina was able to enjoy an amusement park ride because her family was able to select a ride that could accommodate her. This made me reflect on the importance of knowing a student with special needs very well. If you take the time to learn about them, you are much more likely to be able to successfully match them with entertainment, lessons, activities, or other engaging events that they will enjoy and benefit from. At times it is important to consider physical limitations so you can make it possible for them to enjoy multiple activities.
