  • Meeting of Estate General
  • We, of the Third Estate, think it is only fair that the First and Second Esates begin to recieve taxes too. They have much more money and it would help solve the crisis.
  • All in favor? 2-1! Taxes will be raised once again on the Third Estate. Better luck next time!
  • Tennis Court Oath
  • We must stick together! Our revolution is near!
  • YEAAAAAH!
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • CHAAAARGE!
  • I don't get paid enough...
  • The financial crisis in France becomes so bad, King Louis XVI calls the Estates General to order. To solve the financial crisis, the King and Nobles decided to vote by order, meaning each Estate gets 1 vote. It was voted 2-1 (1st Estate and 2nd Estate vs the 3rd Estate) that taxes should be raised on the Third Estate. The Third Estate was the poorest group, but made up nearly 95% of the French population. Rightfully so, the Third Estate began to get fed up with how they were being treated.
  • March on Versailles
  • We will share our food with you... I guess...
  • The Third Estate began to get so fed up with the treatment they were receiving, they decided to take things into their own hands. They created the National Assembly, basically their own political power. Although the First and Second Estates attempted to close buildings to stop meetings of the NA, they were unsuccessful and the NA held a pledge for to stick together during the revolution. Shortly after they created the Constitution of 1791 hoping to eliminate the monarchy and implement Enlightenment ideas .
  • Reign of Terror
  • The NA became aware that the government would not roll over for them. They would need force. They stormed the prison at Bastille on July 14, 1789 due to the overwhelming amount of gun powder there. The NA members stormed the prison and left with the leading generals head on a pitchfork. This gave the people of France greater hope of a revolution to come.
  • Rise of Napoleon
  • As the conflict and irritation of the people grew, the King and Queen were no where to be found. They were living lavish, ignoring everything happening at the Palace of Versailles. The most angered was the women of France. They marched to the palace and demanded to King and Queen come close to the people, so they could more accessible during tough times, like now. Bread was costing nearly 80% of a mans salary. The King promised to give them food from the rich stores of the Nobles and King.
  • We demand food! We know you are keeping an abundance to yourself. My kids are starving!
  • After King Louis is found traitor, and executed publicly by guillotine in 1792, Robespierre takes lead. He believes in republic style government, new enlightenment ideas, and fighting for the underdog (so the majority of France). Although, Robespierre has a bit of a power trip. He executes anyone who stands in the way of the enlightenment... and I mean anyone. If you spoke ill, the guillotine would be your new best friend. Over 40,000 die during Robespierre reign of terror. The people grow weary of Robespierre and he is executed by guillotine in 1794, ending the reign of terror.
  • Abolish the Kings!
  • No more kings? Who will live lavish??
  • After the Reign of Terror, Napoleon Bonaparte takes power in France and France begins to thrive under him. France becomes more connected through Napoleons extreme military success. Shortly after, Napoleon names himself Emperor of the French. Napoleon also reforms education in France, making the citizens and children much smarter, increasing economy, morale and much more. Unfortunately Napoleon loses a battle, and is sent to the island of Elba where he escapes, but is soon after captured. He dies in 1821.
  • We love Napoleon! Go France!
  • I name myself... Emperor of France!
  • He has won us a lot of wars...
