The winter forage served as winter quarters for George Washington and his army. The camp was right outside of Philadelphia after the British took it over. Valley forge was very defensible due to its high ground and position. The forage was close enough for Washington to maintain pressure on the British.

Soldiers Quarters
Over 2,000 long huts laid out on military streets. Each log hut was built with 2 windows during the spring. Also, defensive trenches were added along with 5 redoubts to protect the encampment. 12 soldiers would share a hut.

Problems Faced by the Soldiers #1
The soldiers lacked some supplies. With what they had they could make "fire cake" which was a food made with a mix of water and flour. There were other supplies but they were scarce. This lasted until that February when the soldiers got supplies from members of the Congress.

In that march disease hit the American soldiers. Over the next three months all sorts of disease spread around the camp. In those three months out of the 2,000 who were killed total, two thirds were killed during this time.
