- Man vs. Man because it shows 2 people Brian's parents in a court room arguing. Brian's parents got a divorce and were fighting weather who took him. "A tearing, ugly word that meant fights and yelling, lawyers-God, he thought, how he hated lawyers who sat comfortable smiles and tired to explain to him in legal terms how all that he lived in was coming apart-and the breaking and shattering of all solid things."
- Man vs. Self because it shows Brian and is mother at the mall and he sees his mom with a man. Brian's mother was being a little to friendly with the man that Brian felt sick to his stomach. "His mother was in a station wagon with a man. And she had leaned across and kissed him, kissed the man with the short blond hair, and it was not a friendly peck, but a kiss."
- Man vs. Nature because in this Brian is in the nature and gets hurt by a Porcupine. And Brian is by himself crying. "His fingers gingerly touched a group of needles that had been driven through his pants and onto the fleshy part of his calf."
