  • He's all there! He's all there!
  • Word Choice
  • By: Sofia Ornberg
  • Imagery
  • This scene has an excited and hopeful tone. This is the scene where brother was watching Doodle wanting to do something bad to hurt Doodle, but then saw him smile. In the story is says, "Mama, he smiled. He's all there! He's all there!"(pg. 5)
  • Symbolism
  • The author used a negative word choice when describing Doodle and having to take Doodle everywhere. The story say, "He was a burden in many ways" (pg.10). This is describing Doodle in a negative way by saying he is a burden.
  • Theme
  • The author uses a lot of imagery in this short story. One example is when he describes the scene, "The flower garden is prim, the house a gleaming white, and the pale fence across the yard" (pg. 2). This imagery shows an image of what the yard looked like and what season it is was becoming.
  • In the Scarlet Ibis there are many examples of symbolism. One example is the death of the scarlet ibis which represents Doodle's death. The way the scarlet ibis looked when it died is explained as "graceful neck jerked twice into an S.. Its legs were crossed and it's claw like feet were delicately curved at rest" (pg. 21). When Doodle died he was described as, "head thrown far back.. His little legs, bent sharply at the knees" (pg. 42). The way the scarlet ibis was laying symbolizes the way Doodle was laying when he died.
  • There are many different themes in "The Scarlet Ibis." One example of theme in the story is don't take family for granted because you never know when they may leave. This is shown in the story because in the beginning Brother wanted to kill Doodle and thought he was a burden, but when he died he felt guilty.
