Motherhood Vs. Career

- You and Anthony have been married for three years, kids must be on your radar by now!
- Jill has invited her Aunt May over and is asked several questions regarding her personal life. The questions all regard Jill's marriage and motherhood; very gender specific roles.
- Wasn't the game great last night?
- On the other side of the deck, Jill's husband, Anthony, speaks with her Uncle Bill. Their conversation is much lighter and less personal. This emphasizes that women are put under different pressures than men even in casual situations.
- Best one in a while! They could've had better drinks at the bar, but oh well!
- Jill makes a point to mention the things that are important to her and Anthony now without children. Some may see these priorities as selfish.
- 2 Years Later
- Maybe it will be in the cards, but right now we're focusing on our careers since I just got that promotion.
- Jill begins to wonder if her Aunt May thinks she is doing something wrong. She is feeling the pressure put on her to conform to the gender roles typically fulfilled by women. She feels frustrated.
- Maybe she thinks I'm not equipped, or that I'm being selfish. I have a good mom, but that doesn't mean I want to be one right now. Why should it matter?
- Your career will be there later, have children while you can! Give it some thought!
- Jill considers her options of taking a break from her career to have children. It's something she has always wanted, but has prioritized her career in a field dominated by men.
- Maybe she's right. I could always go back to work later.
- Jill decided to not follow the traditional route seen for women by becoming a mother, and chose to stay focused on her career and feels happy in that decision. Having children is not out of the picture, but it is not her current priority.
