- In the book Christopher the boy (who is autistic), has been told that his mother died in a heart attack 2 years back, but she is alive and had just divorced and Christopher dad had kept all her letters from Christopher. During the book Christopher had been looking for the person who killed their neighbors dog too.

- Christopher is running away to London to live with his mother.
- I don't think that is the best idea Christopher.
- Christopher boards a train to go to London.
- Hey kid, where are your parents? And is that a rat!
- A police officer confronts Christopher and asks him about his parents and pet rat.
- My mom is in London. 451c Chapter Road, and yes that is my pet rat Toby.
- Toby escapes and Christopher finds him on the train tracks. He gets him back.
- Where is Toby!Ahhh
- Christopher makes it to London and finds his mom and they then live in her flat.
