- Atticus is a very even-keeled type of guy; he does not get too worked up about stressful situations. He is not affected by what other people say or think. He is consistent and rooted in his beliefs.

- Jem is brave and curious, has a protective nature, and comes to understand his own sense of morality.

- Dill is a diminutive, confident boy with an active imagination.

- Finch lives with her father, Atticus, her brother, Jem, and their black cook, Calpurnia, in Maycomb. She is intelligent and, by the standards of her time and place, a tomboy.

- ,Calpurnia is the Finch family's black housekeeper. Cal has spent her life around the Finches and has looked after Scout and Jem since they were babies.
