Francisco Vaquez de Coronado
In 1510, he was the first European to explore the Texas Coast.
La Salle
In 1526 he began exploring Florida. In 1528 he was shipwrecked on Galveston Island. He was given food and shelter by Gulf Indians. In 1536 he arrived in Mexico City telling stories of Cibola-the fabled city of gold.

In 1540 Coronado and 1,000 men left to discover the Palo Duro Canyon, the Grand canyon, and the Pacific Ocean but he was considered a failure to Spain because he did not find any riches.
He was an already famous explorer who in 1685 arrived in Texas-Matagorda Bay on a ship called 'The Belle'. In 1687 45 survivors of the 400 men with him left for Canada. On the way La Salle was murdered by his own men. Only 7 of all the people with him survived. Then Spain came to claim the land and built missions.
