  • Robert Hooke
  • These captivities in this cork look a lot like cells...They are very small spaces and very close to each other as well.
  • Robert Brown
  • ?
  • Matthias Schleiden
  • I wonder how important cells really are...
  • Hooke was a big contributor to the Cell Theory. While inspecting the tiny boxlike captivities on a cork, he thought that the captivities looked like individual cells, and that led him to the understanding of what he soon called cells as the smallest units of life. He had also discovered the Law of Elasticity, which is also known as Hooke's Law.
  • Theodor Schwann
  • I believe that all plant and animal tissues are composed of cells. Now I have to discover the truth.
  • Brown started the understanding of cells. He had discovered the nucleus and that helped many later understandings of cells. Scientists soon understood as well that all organisms are composed of one or more cells.
  • Rudolf Virchow
  • Schleiden had done a lot of research about plants. He concluded that all plant tissues are composed of cells and that an embryonic plant arose from a single cell. He had declared that the cell is the basic building block of all plant matter.
  • Zacharias Janssen
  • This new microscope can really help me see up close! This can help with many observations.
  • Schwann made theories about cells. One that he had proposed was the cell theory in which all plant and animal tissues are composed of cells. This soon led to scientists figuring out that cells are the basic unit of structure and function. He had also said that within an individual organism all the cells are identical. Schwann had also studied physiology of muscle contraction.
  • Virchow had also made theories. He had used that all cells arise from pre-existing cells to lay the groundwork for cellular pathology, or the study of disease at the cellular level. His work had made it more clear to others that diseases occur at the cellular level. The work he had done also led to scientists being able to diagnose diseases more accurately. He had named many medical and scientific terms including Chromatin, Parenchyma and Spina Bifida.
  • I believe that all cells come from pre-existing cells. This is my example: The one cell creates another cell, and there are now two of the same cell.
  • Janssen had invented the Compound Optical Microscope. This microscope made it easier to observe cells and get a better understanding of them. He had scientific records, and some of them were destroyed in Nazi Exploits.
