  • In Perks, Chbosky utilizes a setting many are familiar with: High School. High School is a place where change is inevitable and is oftentimes where individuals gain a sense of who they want to be. Although this can be beneficial to most, it can also serve to negatively corrupt innocence with harsh expectations and realities. One example is shown early on in Perks with Susan, who dated Michael before he took his own life. Charlie described her as kind and fun to be around, but over summer she”Had her braces taken off, and she got a little taller and prettier and grew breasts. Now she acts a lot dumber in the hallways, especially when boys are around. And I think it’s sad because Susan doesn’t look happy.” (8) This is why Chbosky chose High School, because even early on Freshman year people are changing and figuring out who they are/who they want to be.
  • One major conflict Charlie faces through Perks is how he reacts when put in situations that challenge what he’s been taught. Although he still prioritizes others expectations, Charlie does in fact have his own desires. He just doesn’t know how to act appropriately and tends to get himself into uncomfortable scenarios. The truth or dare conflict could have been prevented had Charlie understood how to tell Mary E. how he really felt about her in private. But, he thought what Sam/Pat told him about dating was 100% true and therefore buried his real feelings until they eventually caused him to make the not-so-great decision of kissing who Charlie actually wanted to kiss - Sam.
  • Ignore the dare: Would be made fun of but kind of safe…
  • Freeze up: would ruin the night and gf would be mad
  • Kiss Sam: I really like her, but she doesn’t see me that way and her boyfriend would be mad
  • Kiss Marry Elizabeth: Socially acceptable but I really don’t like her…
  • At the end of The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, Charlie has evolved from this indifferent bystander into an involved and bright young man.
