- The term Heavy Metals refer to any metallic chemical element that has a relatively high density and is toxic or poisonous at low concentrations.

- They are found in the environment include the geologic, industrial, agricultural, pharmaceutical, domestic effluents and atmospheric sources.Environmental pollution is very prominent in point source areas such as mining, foundries and smelters and other metal based industrial operations.
- Heavy metals are toxic to soil,plants aquatic life and human health and human health if their concentrations is high in the compost. The most common metal pollution in freshwater comes from mining companies that drain into the water. Then entering the food chain through marine life such as fish which can then affect predators such as bigger fish, birds and mammals, including humans, which migrate and transport the pollutant to different ecosystems.
