- "Four thousand francs!"
- "Yes."
- Oh no! I have to give the all eighteen thousand francs I own. The rest I have to loan money. I am going to be in so much debt!
- "I'll pack it right away."
- "We'll take it."
- Mr. Loisel and his wife spent the next ten years trying to pay off the debt. Mr. Loisel worked evenings, putting the books of some merchants in order, and nights he often did copying at five sous a page.
- While the wife washed the dishes the soiled linen, which she hung on the line to dry. Mme. Loisel was all old now. She had become a strong, hard woman, the crude woman of the poor household. Her desires to be rich and fancy were all gone.
- One day, at the Champs-Elysees
- (1) "Matilda? Is that you? “Oh! my poor girl! How you have changed!”
- (3) "Because of me? How is that?”
- (2) "Yes, I have had some hard days since I saw you; and some miserable ones — and all because of you...”
- “You say that you bought a diamond necklace to replace mine? Oh! My poor Matilda! Mine were false. They were not worth over five hundred francs!”
- “You recall the diamond necklace that you loaned me to wear to the Minister’s ball? Well, I lost it. And I returned another to you exactly like it. And it has taken us ten years to pay for it. You can understand that it was not easy for us who have nothing. But it is finished and I am decently content.”
