  • In "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street", by Rod Sterling one of the main themes is Fear and suspicion are destructive. For example, on page 75, when Mr. Goodman's car started suspiciously, everyone was quick to corner him, jumping to conclusions and immediately making him seem guilty. This shows how everyone was so quick to blame him because they were afraid and confused. In addition, on pages 82 and 83, when a dark figure suddenly appears on the road and starts walking toward them, Charlie acts out of impulse, shooting the mysterious figure before they even had a chance to realize it was Pete Van Horn. This is important because this shows how quick Charlie was to shoot this man, which led to more fighting, blaming, and distress on Maple Street. Lastly, on page 86, two figures are shown discussing their plan, which was to create madness by turning off the devices of the residents of Maple Street. The aliens had planned this all along, scheming and orchestrating chaos on Maple Street. This is extremely important because it proves that fear and suspicion can eventually lead to disruption. In conclusion, each of these situations are evidence that fear and suspicion are destructive. Maple Street became a madhouse in just hours because it’s people turned on each other due to suspicion.
