- I am a non-Catholic in Maryland & so long a we are the majority, you Catholics will not be allowed to have churches or hold political office!

- Great! However, we don’t have enough priest for our Catholic population.
- We the priest of the U.S., have elected you, John Carroll, to be the first bishop in the country. You will be stationed in Baltimore. We need you to establish order in our churches.

- We the German, Irish, and Italian immigrants are coming to the U.S. for new opportunities. Subsequently, we will greatly increase the Catholic population.
- We are the “Know Nothing” political party. You know I heard the the Vatican is increasing power in American to eventually take it over.
- We are both Catholics fighting for both sides of the Civil War. This act will ease tensions by showing Catholics are patriotic. However, we will still continue to face prejudice.
