  • On March 5th, 1965, Charlie Gordon wrote his first progress report two weeks after his 37th birthday. He wants to become smart. He is developmentally disabled and has been chosen for experimental surgery to increase his intelligence. The doctor has already performed the operation on a mouse named Algernon and believe they can for him too.
  • Climax
  • The surgery is successful and Charlie's intelligence increases. However, he finds that his emotional intelligence does not meet his mental intelligence. Charlie realizes the ableism he's been subjected to for most of his life.
  • Falling Action
  • Charlie leaves his job at the bakery because people treat him differently as they are unaware of his operation. Charlie's intelligence surpasses his doctors and he comes to a friendship with Algernon, all the while alienating himself from people like Alice.
  • Resolution
  • The doctors showcase Algernon and Charlie at a scientific convention in Chicago. The early stages of the experiment disgruntle Charlie and he runs back with Algernon to New York. Algernon's progress begins to fade and Charlie realizes he's subjected to the same fate.
  • Charlie and Algernon continue to the lab where Charlie continues to research. Algernon dies and Charlie visits his family. Charlie and his sister reconcile over their senile mother and he regrets he won't be a big brother for much longer.
  • Charlie and Alice begin a relationship before Charlie's condition worsens. Charlie's condition comes to such a stage that Alice breaks up with him. Charlie's final wish before being taken to the Warren House is for someone to lay flowers at Algernon's grave.
