Storyboard-Text

  • Before the Green Revolution, India was notable to produce enough crops to feed itsgrowing population.Old methods of farming were used andthere was hardly any mechanization.
  • At independence, about 75 % of the country's population was dependent on agriculture. Productivity in the agricultural sector was very low due to the absence of required infrastructure for majority of farmers.
  • What are we going to do?
  • Not a good harvest this year!!
  • Why don't you setup an irrigation system?
  • I do not have enough money to afford that...
  • India's agriculture vitally depends on the monsoon and if the monsoon fell short ,the farmers were in trouble unless they had irrigation facilities, which very few had.
  • Did you hear about the Green Revolution? And the new type of seeds... HYV ?
  • Yes! It refers to the large increase in production of food grains from the use of High Yielding Variety seeds
  • The farmers who could benefit from HYV seeds required reliable irrigation facilities as well as the financial resources to purchase fertilizer and pesticide.
  • The use of these seeds required the use of fertilizer and pesticide in the correct quantities as well as regular supply of water; the application of these inputs in correct proportions is vital.
  • As a result, the first phase of the green revolution (approximately mid 1960s up to mid 1970s) the use of HYV seeds were restricted to the more affluent states such as Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
  • Punjab succeeded because the farmers could afford the new techniques introduced by green revolution
  • And the farmers in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu also had enough facilities to adopt these techniques.
