- I'm so smart!  Waah!
- Charlie Gordon is a 37 year old man with a mental disability, making him much less intelligent than a normal person, with an IQ of 68.  He works in a factory as a janitor and has a teacher by the name of Ms. Kinnian.  To prepare for an experiment he was chosen for, he does several tests, such as inkblot tests, a thematic apperception test, and racing in a maze with Algernon, the mouse.
- Climax
- Charlie Gordon is undergoes the experiment by Dr. Strauss to enhance intelligence, and he accepts.  
- Falling Action
- Charlie's intelligence increases, and he learns many things, such as reading, writing, foreign languages, and beating Algernon in mazes.  Due to their fear of his new intelligence, his coworkers petition to get him fired from his job.  His intelligence eventually surpasses Strauss', yet the more intelligent he grows, the more lonely he does as well, for now he can understand his mistreatment of the past, and he cannot relate to anyone of lesser intelligence.
- Resolution
- Charlie, alone in a restaurant, sees another mentally disabled boy being laughed at by customers and angrily stands up for him.  He realizes the abuse that people like him experience and is determined to use his intelligence to help those people.
- Charlie discovers that those that had the surgery undergo a regression, through watching Algernon the mouse become unintelligent.  Realizing he may not have as much time as he thought at being intelligence, he tries his hardest to research this development, while his intelligence is slowly eaten away.  During this process of research, Algernon passes away, and he is buried in a little cheese box.
- Charlie finally fully regresses back to his old self, after completing his report to Nemur and Strauss about how their procedure is unsuccessful.   Once he has gone back to his old self,   He decides to go to leave New York so he doesn't hurt Ms. Kinnian, and goes somewhere where no one knows the name Charlie Gordon.  He takes a couple books to try to get at least a bit smarter, and finally asks Kinnian to put flowers on Algernons grave.
