  • The Setting
  • The Theme
  • EQUALITY!
  • The Imagery
  • 'Cause I walk like I got oil wellsPumping in my living room
  • This poem portrays the setting of a house. - 'Cause I walk like I got oil wells Pumping in my living room and - 'Cause I walk like I got gold mines Digging in my own back yard. Because of these phrases and similes, it makes me think that the setting in a house, even though it is set in Maya Angelou's mind.
  • The Symbolism
  • The theme of this poem is rising higher and fighting for equality. There is also a hint of self-acceptance and love in the poem. Maya Angelou wrote this poem in the 1970's, when women, people of colour and lgbtqia+ people were fighting for equality. In the poem, it says that if people ever want to bring her down, she will rise up.
  • The Speaker
  • The imagery in this poem is very vivid. In the beginning of the poem, the imagery was very descriptive and could paint a picture clear in your mind. You may write me down in history, with your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod on me, in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. When hearing this line, you can imagine dust floating in the air, rising up.
  • The Purpose
  • When I hear the sentence: ’Cause I walk like I've got oil wellsPumping in my living room., I think that Maya means she walks like she is rich, because when you find oil in the earth, you become very rich, since it is very valuable. Also the line: I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. has a few meanings. I'm a black ocean also refers to her as skin colour, and how she is deep and unexpected. It also means she comes and goes like a tide.
  • The speaker in this poem is Maya Angelou, the writer. Hearing this poem, I can infer that Maya is a confident person who is not ashamed of who she is. I can also infer that she is somewhat mysterious, with her choice of language. For example: I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
  • The purpose of this poem is to empower women, especially women of colour. This poem talks about strength and self-love, rising up, and succeeding, even if people put you down and set you up to fail. When I read this poem I feel inspired to keep on moving and try my best at all times, despite the struggles along the way.
